First day of Work experience
Tuesday 6/15/2010
Today i caught the 730 train from lalor station, to get off at bell station to catch a bus to the austin hospital. I started at 9 but left so early incase i went to the wrong place. I got there at about 815 and turns out i did go out to the right place so i was 30mins early. But they let me start early anyway. I was working in the Radiology department incase you don tknow its where they do xrays and CT Scans of peoples bones, brains, skeletal systems to see if there are any broken joints. At first i found it interesting, seeing how everybody did there job and seeing how professional they are. I picked up what they were doing very fast but i wasnt allowd to touch it incase i made a mistake. Eachtime someone went into the zray room, you have to stand in a box, so that the radiation doesnt get to you because it can cause serious problems. There was an Intern that took me around the hospital, I felt like i waas in greys atamony for about 10 minutes. He took me into the people who need 24hr monitering. It was really sad seeing tubes and oxygen breathers just stuck in the patients mouth white they are sleeping. My lunch break was at 12.30 and i went down to the caperteria to buy something to eat, i felt like a loner! My break ended at 1 and i headed back to observe what was going on in the 3 different rooms. The man told me that fat people have small lungs and skinny people have long lungs. He also taught me how to look at a scan and that the black parts of the ribcage is air around. And i saw a heart and a stomach. It was quite interesting. Then i got moved to CT. Im not sure what that stands for but its a different type of radiology but in a different department. It was much cooler and the people in there were more interactive with me compared to the other people. The guy was on youtube watching "teachers" a tv series. I saw a man suffering alot of pain, while doing the scan and it made me feel sorry for him, i looked at his name and he was asain and it made me more sad for some reason. The lady took me into the room and she taught me how to put a "Contrast" on which held Iodine medicine to inject into the patient so its easier to see blood vessels inside the patient. So she mademe put a tube on a stand, fill the iodine and it held 94mL. The man let me go home at 4, becaues he didnt want me to travle in the dark what a nice man :) I usually finished at 5. Now im at home watching tv.
